Ever since my oldest girls were little, every year for their birthdays I buy them a book. They each get a copy of the same book, and the theme is always the same- my love for them. I sit down with their books and write a long message in each one- I talk about what they did in the past year, how they’ve grown, what I’ve seen, what’s happened in the world. I talk about how proud of them I am, what my favourite things about the year with them have been and how amazing they are.
I’ve been doing it for years (didn’t come up with the idea until they were 3 and 5) and it’s one of my absolute favourite gifts to give to them. The books aren’t geared towards their age- most of them are books geared to little ones, but I think (or at least I want to think!) that it is also one of the gifts they look forward to.
Here is my list of my “love you books”
Wherever You Are, My Love will find you by Nancy Tillman
On the Night You Were Born by Nancy Tillman
Someday by Alison Meghee and Peter H. Reynolds
The Crown on Your Head by Nancy Tillman (I’m detecting a pattern!)
Love you Forever by Robert Munsch
You are my Miracle by Maryann Cusimano Love & Satomi Ichikawa
I Wish you More by Amy Krouse Rosenthal & Tom Lichtenheld
Why a Daughter Needs a Mom by Gregory E. Lang
My Love will be With You by Laura Krauss Melmed
I’ll Never Let you Go by Smriti Prasadam-Halls
My hope is that they will treasure these books. When life is hard, and they need their mom and I can’t be there, they will read the words of the book and the words I wrote and know that no matter what, my love for them is all encompassing. They will know that they were loved and cherished. And they will know that I am always with them.
What traditions do you create?
